Folley Catheters Size 6

The Foley Catheter Size 6 is the smallest indwelling catheter available, designed exclusively for neonates and infants. It is an extremely fine tube used when urinary drainage is required in the tiniest patients. Often made of 100% silicone for stiffness (to aid insertion) and biocompatibility, it may or may not have a balloon (or a very small 1.5-3cc balloon). It is a critical specialty item for neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and pediatric surgery.

Description

The Size 6 Foley Catheter (6 Fr) is a specialized device for neonatal care. Because the urethra of a neonate is extremely fragile, this catheter is manufactured to the highest tolerance of smoothness and flexibility.

Technical Details:
– Size: 6 Fr (Color code: Light Green).
– Material: usually 100% Silicone. Silicone is preferred because it is inert, non-toxic, and has a wider internal lumen for its external size compared to latex.
– Balloon: Some size 6 catheters are “Foley” type with a tiny balloon; others may be simple non-retaining catheters necessitating taping. If it has a balloon, strict adherence to inflation volume is vital to prevent bladder rupture.

Usage:
– Critical care monitoring of urine output in infants.
– Surgical management.
– Voiding cystourethrograms (VCUG).

Warning:
Handle with extreme care. The small lumen is prone to clotting; continuous irrigation is rarely possible with this size. Sterile and single-use.
