System Components:
– Bottle: A rigid, transparent container clearly marked with graduation lines to measure the volume of drainage fluid accurately.
– Water Seal: The user adds sterile water to a specified level. This water acts as a valve; air bubbles out through the water when the patient exhales or coughs, but the water prevents air from being sucked back into the chest during inhalation.
– Silicone Tube: Flexible, kink-resistant tubing that connects the bottle to the chest catheter. Silicone is preferred for its durability and milking characteristics.
– Hanger: Usually equipped with a handle or hanger to attach to the bedside.
Safety Guidelines:
– Always keep the bottle *below* the level of the patient’s chest to prevent fluid siphoning back into the lungs.
– Monitor for ‘swinging’ (oscillation) of the water column, which indicates patency.
– Monitor for continuous bubbling (which may indicate an air leak).
– Sterile, single-patient use.
